Spec Ad

It was never just a game.

A cinematic short that turns the most tense moment in Catan into a fantasy epic.

The brief

Board games sell emotion, not mechanics. The rage of getting your wheat stolen by the robber is the most relatable, most meme-able feeling in Catan. We wanted to show that feeling is not silly. It is earned.

The thought process

We started with the question: what if the robber was real? The jump from a living room argument to a medieval wheat field had to feel seamless, not gimmicky. So we matched the camera language between the two worlds: the same tension, the same pacing, the same feeling of loss. The dice roll is the bridge.

The hooded robber emerging from the barn was cast and styled to feel threatening but not violent. The peasant family's reaction sells the stakes. When we cut back to the table, the audience already feels what a seven means.

How we work

  1. 01 Script and storyboard the full piece before any production begins.
  2. 02 Cast, style, and shoot the real-world segments with natural lighting.
  3. 03 Build the fantasy world as a generated cinematic sequence, matched to the live action grade.
  4. 04 Edit with sound design that sells the transition between worlds.
